Leslie Porterfield on The Thunder Road Show 01/04/09

Just about everyone has found an open stretch of highway with nobody in site and sped up a little.

Some of us have even floored it trying to push the limits of our own fear of speed.

For Leslie Porterfield top end blasts are second nature. Kind of like walking or driving a stick shift car.

Leslie, pictured on the left with Jason Britton of Speed Channels popular show "Super Bikes", holds 3 land speed records on a motorcyle.

Last August Leslie set a record of 209 mph in the 1300cc motorcyle division along with 2 other landspeed records at the Bonneville Salt Flats.

Leslie a native Texan who lives and works in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area runs a motorcycle shop called High Five Cycles for a living and resets records for fun.

Don't forget to listen in Sunday as Leslie will tell Doug and Blue what its like blow up an engine at 245 mph on the salt flats.

Thunder Road Show "maverick" mascott

The Thunder Road Show now has a project car. During the race season in '09 we will take this car to various drag strips, car shows and remote events around the Houston area.

This is a 1970 Ford Maverick with a 306 cubic inch Ford engine.

The "mascott maverick" has a race built transmission and a small dose of N2O so it will be fun.

This car has a 6 point role bar and slicks. We don't plan on setting any records with this car but we do plan on taking a few select people (ie other shows host's and interns) for a ride. We will keep everyone updated with appearance dates so you can come by and watch us make a pass down the track or just say hi.

Tomball's own "Big" Ben Frazier is scheduled to come into the studio this Sunday fresh off his COTT "cheap street" win last weekend. Ben has been around drag racing and mustangs for many years. He built this car pictured after having his Saleen convertable folded up in an incedent with another car at the race track. Ben has competed in Fun Ford Weekend events, Pinks All Out, Clash of the Titans events and other local racing events with his 88mm turbo charged mustang coupe. We will talk to Ben about his wins this past season and what his plans are for next year.

Headlines....Doug puts Blue in the wall at MSR!!!!!!!!

Doug and Blue get the royal treatment at Motorsports Ranch Houston (MSR)!!!!!!11!!!!111!!!eleven

On Monday we took a trip into Blue's neck of the woods to MSR in Angelton. Leslie and the staff at MSR gave us the grand tour of the facility and even let us race some of the Karts.

Doug and Blue got to compete in a five lap Kart race. During that race Blue tried to pass Doug in a turn so as any good racer would do Doug spun Blue out into the grass and the cones and then kept going.

After Doug schooled Blue on how to drive they both got to experience the thrill of taking a real NASCAR car around the road course at MSR. Good times folks.

Check out www.msrhouston.com
Xperience the Excitement Thrill Rides

Take a few electrifying laps around our world-class racetrack in a race-prepared BMW M3, a Radical Sports Racer or a NASCAR. A true race-professional will take you around our premier racetrack at adrenaline-pumping speeds. Each speed-fueled lap will be more intense than the last leaving you wanting more.

Katy's own Kristin Bumbera will be in Studio with us this Sunday 10/19/08

BUMBERA IMPRESSES NASCAR TEAM OWNERS
AT DRIVE FOR DIVERSITY COMBINE
IN SOUTH BOSTON VIRGINIA

SOUTH BOSTON, VA – OCTOBER 14, 2008 This is the second year that Kristin Bumbera has received an invitation to test in front of NASCAR team owners who will decide if she will drive for them in the Drive for Diversity program in 2009. Last year she was selected by Frank Jordan of Golden State Racing to drive a full season in the NASCAR Whelan Late Model Series where she earned 2 wins, 12 top 5’s and 14 top 10’s and currently holds the Late Model track record at All American Speedway of 13.69 seconds. S_BOSTON_1008.jpg (57095 bytes)

Kristin was the third driver out laying down a benchmark lap time for the remaining drivers. On lap 17 the right front tire suddenly blew out in the center of turns one and two sending her car into the turn two wall. NASCAR assured her that she would get the chance to finish her run because the accident was due to a mechanical failure and no fault of hers. Bumbera would showcase her resilience returning to the track and laying down another impressive run. Several team owners later let Kristin know how impressed they were with her determination calling her a “real trooper”.

Bumbera leaves the combine today very optimistic about her 2009 plans.

10/12/08

It's October folks and the end of the racing season is fast approaching us. The race for the chase is in full effect and the tempers are flaring. Just this week Kevin Harvick and Carl Edwards got a little fist to cuff in the pits and it made front line news. You can see the picture on Foxsports.com.

The boys in the NHRA are hard at it with the fastest qualifing field in Prostock history. 16 cars qualified this weekend at the Virginia Nationals between 6.554 and 6.59. Dave Connelly stole the win from Coughlin with a smoking 6.57 pass.

On today's show we had Steve aka "Steve Ferrari" in studio talking about Team Risi out of Houston and all that is involved in racing The American Le Mans series. Thanks for joining us again Steve. People start your radios cause its about to get bumpy. And a little exciting.

Thunder Rd. Show had Kimberly the Game Girl in studio talking race Karts

Sunday on the Thunder Road Show Rob, Blue and Doug were graced with the presence of 1560 excellence (Kimberly Gonzolas) in studio with us. 1560 loves our Game Girls and what they do for the station. Kimberly works at a local Kart racing facility near Katy, Doug's home town, and was in studio promoting the track and filling everyone in on how much fun Kart racing is.

Kimberly's 9 year old sister competes in cart racing alongside men and women from the age of 5 to 75 so don't get this confused with junkie "go-cart" tracks were you pay $15 for 20 minutes of so called fun. The fastest cars are capable of 90 mph top speeds and 5g lateral force in the turns. The guys discussed how some of these Karts are quicker to 60mph than most "super cars" available to the general public.

Doug and Blue are currently planning to get more involved with Gulf Coast Karter for a palooza with giveaway's, and an afternoon at the track. Can you say "who wants to win the chance to drive a 100 horsepower rocket on wheels"?

Here is the website for Kimberly's place of business where you can take the whole family for a great day of racing and good brisket or bbq.
http://www.racekarts.com/ go check it out and let us know what you think.

Thunder Rd. Show @ Houston Raceway Park 09/27/08

The Thunder Road Show was invited out to the ASCS Sprint car race's at Houston Raceway Park last Saturday night and we couldn't have asked for better time or better weather. Doug Johnson and guest's arrived at the track early on Saturday night in time to see the entire event and walk through the pits with "pit passes" that were courtesy of HRP.

There were multiple classes running Saturday night but the two classes with the most cars were the "crate late models" and the actual "sprint" cars with the big wings on top.

Jason Johnson from the Dallas area racing the number 11 car sponsored by "The Shop" which is based out of the Dallas/Ft. Worth area also. Here is a link to ASCS's driver profile page for Jason (http://www.ascsracing.com/ascsdriverdetail.asp?id=53) Jason came out and pwned the rest of the field on how to drive on the dirt.

First of all, we would like to let you know that our thoughts and prayers are with all of those effected by hurricane Ike. We hope that as time goes by things get back to normal (as much as that is possible) for each of you.

WE ARE BACK ON THE AIR!
Ike may have knocked us down, but we bounced back last weekend. We even had the "task master" Kyle in the house, twisting knobs and doing his thing.

Todd Simpson was also nice enough to come on the show and do an interview for us. It was great having him on! Thanks Todd.

DD Update:
Incase you missed it, our Double D of the week was Kristin Bumbera.

Her website is http://www.kristinbumbera.com/

This Saturday, we are having our second Palooza. This one is at Houston Raceway Park for the sprint car races. Congrats to those who won tickets last weekend on the show. Even if you didn't win tickets, come out and join us for some good racing and good talk about racing.
