THE YEAR OF THE MUSTANG

Someone should petition the Chinese government to have their calender modified thousands of years later. After all the iconic Ford Mustang is certainly worthy of a year on the calender just the same as the dog, monkey and especially the rat.

2010 is going to be the year of the Mustang even if the Chinese government chooses to ignore the relevance that this little inexpensive car has had on pop culture. Beginning with its debut halfway through the year in 1964 this car has turned millions of heads and nearly 50 years later is still making waves in the auto industry.

I was around during the second revolution of this car and still have a fondness for the mid to late '80s "fox bodied" mustangs. The Mustang changed the face of mail order parts in the late '80s and brought about a performance craze that is still smoldering today. When the second Mustang craze started you could see packs of them herded together in a parking lot in most major cities (any given weekend night) like the real mustang horse did a hundred years before in wide open fields all over this country.

With the recent announcement that NASCAR has allowed the use of the Ford Mustang as one of the new cars in the Nationwide Series, and Fords renewed involvement in NHRA's Pro Stock division we are sure to see sales of the original "pony car" sky rocket once again.

The big 3 auto makers had seem to forget that what wins on Sunday sells on Monday as many NASCAR fans have had a hard time getting enthusiastic about a two door family car as thier performance icon. Most "old school" Cup fans are not too shy to tell anyone who will listens about the "Good o'le" days when Petty dominated with a Dodge Charger. Back then you could tell what car each manufacturer was running. With the COT (car of tomorrow) the only way we know what kind of car each driver is driving is with their post race interviews where they have to mention the "M&M's Toyota Camary" so the fans will remember what kind of car that driver just won the race.

Brian Wolfe ,the Director of Ford Racing Technology, has had a huge part in getting his favorite Ford back in front of the public on Sundays. Not only did Brian, who still races his own personal Mustang, have a hand in Fords Super Cobra Jet Mustang development he has also been instrumental in the design of Fords new super trick Pro Stock Engine. The Super Cobra Jet is a "NRHA Super Stock" legal car available straight from Ford Dealers with slicks, a Ford 9" rear end and 10 second times off the show room floor. There is also rumors of 6 NHRA Pro Stock Teams joining Jim Cunningham, and his hot shoe Erica Enders, in the Mustang camp since the debut of the slick new 2010 body style.

In NASCAR news Richard Petty Motorsports announced a merger with Robert Yates Racing and all of the guys who are driving for RPM will be driving Fords next year. You can bet that Jack Roush and Roush Fenway Racing will take this opportunity to improve on the dismal year they had so far in 2009 with only 2 drivers, Carl Edwards and Greg Biffle, in the Chase for the Sprint Cup Championship.

2010 will be awesome for racing fans whether it be straight liners or roundy round, fans as there will be real sports cars, be it a Ford Mustang or Dodge Challenger, out on the tracks as opposed to family sedans morphed into race cars. We can also thank John Force and Bob Tasca III who have been using Mustang bodies for years all be it morphed and barely resembling Mustangs they are Mustangs just the same. Mark my words Mustang will be the hip new buzz word of 2010 when you talk racing.

Thunder Road Show "Coolest car" contest

The Thunder Road Show announces its first ever "Coolest Car" contest.

Here is the idea. Take two equally used mustang fox body cars, and have a competition to see if money or connections can build the coolest car. Add in a Driving Diva like Erica Enders to help judge and you have a couple of fun projects to follow from start to finish.

The competitors:
Team "Connections" is the Thunder Road Show hosts Doug and Blue and one 1986 Mustang GT convertible.

Team "Cash" is a couple of Thunder Road Show fans named Steve and Alex and one 1989 Mustang LX sedan. (AKA notchback or coupe)

Follow along as these two cars are built from scratch to see who can really build the "Coolest Car"

ADRL Dragpalooza in Houston

The hottest drag racing series this side of the NHRA's Full Throttle racing series kicked its season off in Houston again this year. ADRL Qualifying started on Friday and Saturday's eliminations kicked off the '09 season with a bang.

The ADRL created a new class this year called Extreme Pro Stock. This class is similar to the IHRA's mountain motored Pro Stock class.

"The debut of the Extreme Pro Stock class in National Guard ADRL competition concluded with a final round battle between two long time friends and rivals, Brian Gahm and Doug Kirk. Gahm entered eliminations as low qualifier with a 4.105 second elapsed time at 176.51 miles per hour. Kirk had qualified third with a 4.119 second effort". (ADRL.us)

Houstons own Todd Moyer snagged the 5 grand from Flowmaster for being the first Extreme 10.5 driver to run over 185. Thats in the 1/8th folks

Billy Glidden continues to dominate the popular Extreme 10.5 class as the Whitland, Indiana native came back down to H-town to show these boys how its done.

For the whole story click on the title of this post and it will take you to the offical website for the ADRL racing series.

Tune in this Sunday for a special interview with Erica Ortiz

There is nothing hotter than a female race car driver. Well according to Doug and Blue that is. From the Thunder Road Shows conception these guys said they wanted to highlight "Driving Divas" as often as they could. With past guests like Erica Enders and Kristin Bumbera as friends of the show it was only appropriate to contact Erica Oritiz of Fun Ford Weekend (now Battle of the Brands) fame. Just like Ms. Enders and Ms. Bumbera, Erica Ortiz is making waves of her own in the racing comunity. Erica has been mid sixes in the 1/4 with her twin turbo Thunderbird and is currently building a new "Pro-mod" car. Erica also has her own Youtube channel called Horsepower and Heels which keeps her fans updated on future plans and upcoming events. Be sure to tune in this Sunday at 11am to hear the interview with Erica.

Outlaw 10.5 Legend Cory Wheat was in studio last Sunday

If you have ever listened to the Thunder Road Show on 1560 The Game. then you know Doug and Blue love racing. These two don't discriminate against make, model, color or what kind of auto racing they cover.

Doug admits to being of the "drag racing" persuasion and Blue gets his "clues" in go fast and turn left circles. Most shows are a mix of NASCAR updates along with some "straight line" talk.

This past Sunday followed suit as they had Cory Wheat (local Outlaw 10.5 racer) and his tuner "Big" Billy Stocklin in studio.

Cory and Billy discussed the history of this exciting class and talked about the upcoming race season. Cory and Billy plan on running the full "Battle of the Brands" series which is the former "Fun Ford" racing series.

Cory and Billy's interview is up on podcast so just click on the box that says podcast on the right hand side of this page to hear it in full.

Our first remote broadcast in the "books"

February 15, 2009 marks a new date in motorsports history. Not because Matt Kenseth took his #17 Dewalt Tools Ford Fusion to winners circle at the 51st running of the Daytona 500. Not even because Dale Earnhardt jr. couldn't find his pit box all day and then got into a scuffle with Brian Vickers and took out 1/3 of the field with 75 laps to go. No this special day in motorsports history is because the Thunder Road Show, "The Best Damn Motorsports Show Ever", had it's first remote broadcast. That's right 1560 The Game's only motorsports related show was on the road at Jake's Philly Steaks in Houston.

Doug and Blue would like to thank everyone who came out to Jake's including Kristin Bumbera ,pictured above, and Erica Enders. We also had sponsors of the Thunder Road Show there like Circle D Specialties, Allout Off Road, Brian Reese of Nationwide Ins. and Amy Vera of Dr. Robertson's office. The Texas Warehouse donated a very nice Texas star wall decoration. Bullfrog Spa's of Houston gave us some cool stuff to give away as did all of our sponsors. We had a packed house and Jake's said we are welcome back. Thanks everyone for coming out.

A "picture" is worth a thousand words!!!!

All the drivers seen rejuvenated after an off season with no testing and are ready to duke it out in the Super Bowl of Stock Car Racing called the Daytona 500.

We have seen great performances all week and man were we ready to hear D.W. say boogety boogety boogety as annoying as that is.

There is so much to talk about that you just have to listen to our 2 hour Daytona special live from Jake's Philly on Sunday the 15Th to hear all the news from Florida in what is expected to be a great 2009 NASCAR season.

Doug and Blue talk offroading with Tim Thomas and Jeff Mcguire

When Blue and I first discussed my idea of doing a show on motorsports we decided that from day one we would cover just about any motor sport that interested us and not let this become a show just about NASCAR or just about dragracing. Well true to our form we had another great show and it was about the adventures of off roading and rock crawling.

Tim Thomas and Jeff Mcquire joined us in studio to talk about the club they are members of called TX4Wd. Jeff is the President of the Katy chapter and Tim is the Vice President of the same chapter.

Tim and Jeff did a great job for thier fist time on radio and agreed to come back and to keep us up to date on functions and charity events the club is doing. Heck they may even talk a little NASCAR with us. The picture in this post was taken the night before our show. The Katy chapter was in a commercial for a local restuant. Be sure to click on the "podcast" link on the right to hear the show from last Sunday.

Team Snap-on driver Steve Johnson set to come on this Sunday 1/18/09

Get ready ladies and gentleman for the most entertaining guy in all of motorsports.
Steve Johnson who we have followed since the conception of the Thunder Road Show
will be on with us this coming Sunday.

Steve is entertaining because of his true love of winning and love for the sport of dragracing
which is evident in the picture about. We love it when Steve wins because his interviews are
more amped up and random than Johns Force himself.

Be sure and tune in this Sunday at 11am central time to 1560am or www.1560.tv cause you never know what Steve Johnson may do.

Erica Enders in studio

Well race fans the Thunder Road Show is off to a fabulous new year. We came out of the hole strong last Sunday with Leslie Porterfield of High Five Cycles in Dallas, Texas and this Sunday we had world famous NHRA Prostock driver Erica Enders in Studio.

Not only have we had two great "Driving Diva" segments so far we also had our first female caller named Paula who had a great question for Erica. Erica did a great job with us and spent the whole show chatting with us about the upcoming season and about the Disney movie made about her called "Right on Track" that originally aired in 2003.

You can hear the whole interview on the podcast just click on the checkerd flag that says "podcast" on it in the upper right corner of this blog. Thanks again to Erica for coming on the show with us and Paula (first female caller) for the great call.

Beverley Mitchell (7th Heaven) stars as Erica Enders. This was a Disney original movie made about Erica's career in NHRA's JR. Dragster division and originally aired in March of 2003.

Doug and Blue are looking foward to visiting with Erica this Sunday and talking about the upcoming 2009 race season.
